2017 Melton Design Build/GS Forza Juniors Mountain Bike Racing Program

The Melton Design Build/GS Forza Cycling Team is excited to announce our new mountain bike training and racing program for both junior women and men. High school mountain bike racing is one of the fastest growing sports not only in Colorado but across the country. It is exploding throughout the nation and we are excited to add to fuel to the fire.

The team will be led by Becky Batizy and Brady Kappius. Becky is a seasoned mountain bike racer and also a volunteer coach for the state champion Boulder High mountain bike team for the 2016 season.  She will be joined by racer extraordinaire Brady Kappius who is a collegiate national champion and has raced as a professional racer in both cyclocross and various mountain bike disciplines, including enduro and cross country. In addition, Becky and Brady understand the challenges of balancing academics and athletics as a junior racer.

Their focus will be on preparing junior racers for high school mountain bike racing and race around the rocky mountain region through skills development, fitness, and mental preparation; with an emphasis on becoming a better overall rider and having fun. It is a great opportunity for junior racers to hone their skills in a supportive team environment with the main focus of having fun on two wheels.

Practices will begin Thursday March 16th at 4:30 pm and will continue every Thursday until August, when the majority of high school racers transition to racing with their respective high school teams.  There will be team support at various mountain bike races throughout the summer. In addition, all riders have full access to all road, track and cyclocross practices.

Melton Design Build is our title sponsor and primary financial supporter. In addition, team members receive discounts from the following sponsors:

Melton Design Build / GS Forza Cycling Junior Women’s Racing Program

The Melton Design Build / GS Forza Cycling Team is excited to announce our new Junior Women’s Racing Program! We want to see more young women involved in all forms of bike racing, and we’ve created a program to help them explore the sport.

The Colorado High School Mountain Bike League has gotten a lot of young women involved in mountain bike racing, which is great. We think that many of these young athletes might, if given the opportunity, discover that road, track, and cyclocross racing are also exciting and appealing sports. Our team competes in all of the main bike racing disciplines, with coaching and practice support in each area.

We are a juniors team based in Boulder, Colorado. We ride and race year-round, from the first frosty time trial in March, though the road races, criteriums, hill climbs, and off-road races of spring and summer, and then in the mud and snows of autumn until cyclocross season ends in mid-winter. We are an active and familiar presence in Colorado’s bike racing scene, and our distinctive orange kit makes us hard to miss!

To best serve our junior women in 2017 we will have Cari Higgins as road and track coach, and Kristal Boni as cyclocross coach. We will have girls-only practices, as well as combined practices with our junior boys. We want to create an environment where young female athletes can explore racing, pursue their ambitions, and have a lot of fun.

Young women will benefit from joining our team in a variety of ways, including the following.

Team Practices and Racing

– We run a year round program with riders competing in road, track, MTB, and cyclocross.

– We begin the year with indoor training in January and February. In March we transition to twice weekly road practices that run through early August. We also do team training sessions on the track. Our riders usually road-race on the weekends and often race short track MTB or at the velodrome during the week. In late August we begin twice weekly cyclocross practices. During the fall our riders compete in cyclocross and in the High School Mountain Bike League. In November and December the team trains twice a week indoors, with many of our riders looking to peak at cyclocross nationals in January.
